We Read the Labels on the Best-Selling Sleep Gummies. Most Can't Do What the Bottle Says.
If you've tried three or four and you're still awake at 2 AM, it may not be you. Here's what we found, and the one test that tells you if a bottle is worth it.

If you are reading this near midnight, the story is probably familiar. Three or four sleep products this year: a gummy from the drugstore, a tea with a sleepy bear on the box, maybe melatonin. And still, the ceiling.
It is easy to decide you are the problem. Too wired, too stressed, the one person nothing works on. So we stopped asking what was wrong with the people taking these products, and started reading the bottles.
We went through the labels of the best-selling sleep gummies and checked each one three ways. Most failed at least one check. One passed all three.
The dose was never high enough.
Magnesium is the mineral your body leans on to settle down at night. Most sleep gummies list it. Very few give you enough of it to matter.
We lined up the amount in one serving, taken straight from each brand's own label.
Magnesium per serving
From each brand's printed label.
The gap is not small. The bottle that passed every check carries 350 mg per serving. The next best on our list carries less than a third of that, and one lists none at all.
“Proprietary blend” is where the doses disappear.
A proprietary blend lists the ingredients and hides every amount. It can mean a pinch of the expensive ingredient and a lot of the cheap one, and the label gives you no way to check.
If a label won't tell you how much is inside, assume it isn't much. For comparison, this is what a fully printed label looks like.
What an honest label looks like
- Valerian root600 mg
- Passionflower400 mg
- Magnesium glycinate350 mg
- L-theanine200 mg
- 5-HTP200 mg
Every dose printed, per serving. From the bottle that passed.
Nobody checks a gummy before it's sold.
Supplements do not need approval before they reach the shelf. The only real proof of what is inside, and what is not, is an independent lab putting its name to the results.
So we only counted a bottle as clean if a third-party lab had tested it and published what it found. The one that passed scored in the top 3% for purity.

They switch you off. The morning pays.

Most of what people reach for at night works the same way: it switches you off. A nightcap breaks up the second half of the night. THC presses down your dreaming sleep. The antihistamine in a PM pill turns the whole system down.
That is why the morning feels the way it does. Groggy, foggy, half there at 7 AM. It is the bill for the night.

The bottles worth keeping help you settle without flattening you.
Skip a night. Nothing should collapse.
After the first week, skip a night. If your sleep falls apart without it, the bottle was doing something to you, not for you.
A good formula backs up what your body already does.
A night off should just be a night off.
